2015 Mid-Autumn Festival

Sept 2015

Members of the northwest Arkansas Chinese Association, friends, and families gathered in the Memorial Park for a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration, on the 26th of September. We ate moon cakes, sang karaoke, and had tug of wars. There were also a Chinese ink painting and calligraphy session. From the pictures you can tell we had tons of fun! The Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month of a year on the lunar calendar. Family and friends would come together on the festival to give thanks for the harvest of the year and the harmonious unions. Notable parts of celebrating the festival include eating moon cakes, carry brightly lit lanterns, moon honoring, and solving riddles written on or inside the lanterns.

Dragon Boat Festival

June 2015

On June 21, 2015, the Chinese Association of Northwest Arkansas celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival with more than 70 participants from the community, at Hickory Creek Park. The attendees enjoyed various activities during the beautiful afternoon, including boat riding, rope jumping, Hula Hoop, poke, Chinese Chess, game playing and more. This family friendly event brought us together with all kinds of traditional Chinese dishes, especially the delicious rice dumplings (zongzi).

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional and statutory holiday originating in China. In China, the festival was also celebrated as "Poets' Day" in honor of Qu Yuan, who is known as China's first poet. Chinese citizens traditionally throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water and it is also customary to eat rice dumplings (zongzi).

Special thanks: Yujuan Wang, Lijun Xie, Shaojing Wu and her Mom, Hui Chen, Annie Chen help to make the special food - Zongzi; Victoria, Xiaoyan and Haiyan made delicious dishes; Leo Sheck, Chao Liu and Xuehui Duan help with the BBQ; Dr. Bogomilov brought their boat.

Memorial Day Celebration

May 2015

During the Memorial Day weekend, Chinese Association of NW Arkansas (CANWA) organized a holiday gathering in the First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville. Around 30 families participated the fun event despite the rain. This event was moved indoor from the original planned Hickory Park due to the weather. Although no boat ride or BBQ as planned, families enjoyed great homemade food and a variety of activities including ping pong, Karaoke, card game, Redbox families movies, hula hoop, and Chinese chess. People lingered from 2 to 8pm to have fun, and to catch up with old friend and make new ones. The furthest participants drove 5 hours all the way from Dallas!

Special thanks went to DR. B, John Xia and a few other friends who moved the ping pong tables from their home to the church in the rain, Leo carried the karaoke to the church, Shaojing Wu, xiaoyan Yang and Chuncao Wang helped to cook. Victoria also donated a few delicious dishes including 卤蛋。The furthest participants drove 5 hours all the way from Dallas!
